There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Russell KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that Russell KS radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Russell KS employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Clinical training is typically performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But just make certain that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Russell KS x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Russell KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Kansas xray technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Russell KS healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Russell KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Russell KS home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Russell KS colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Russell KS, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?
