Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that Selden KS radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Selden KS employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Clinical training is usually conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Selden KS home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Selden KS x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Selden KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Kansas xray tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Selden KS healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Selden KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Selden KS home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Selden KS schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Selden KS, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
