There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Inez KY hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also routinely assess its performance and safety. Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Inez KY radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Kentucky or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number provide additional options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Inez KY employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Inez KY residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often cheaper than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Inez KY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Inez KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Kentucky radiology technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Inez KY medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Inez KY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Inez KY home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Inez KY colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Inez KY, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you could be asked. Some Background on Inez Kentucky

Inez, Kentucky

Inez (/ˈaɪnəz/) is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Martin County, Kentucky, United States.[2] The population was 466 at the 2000 census.

The area was first settled c. 1810 by James Ward and named Arminta Ward's Bottom. This community was made the seat of Martin County in 1873, replacing its earlier court at Warfield. Upon the occasion, J.M. Stepp renamed it Eden after the Biblical garden. As there was already a post office named Eden, Kentucky, the local postmaster was obliged to rename his Inez on June 23, 1874. The name is usually held to have been derived from that of Inez Frank, the daughter of Louisa's postmaster in neighboring Lawrence County.[3]

President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Inez in 1964, landing by helicopter with his party at an abandoned miniature golf course, to promote the War on Poverty. "At the time, the poverty rate in this coal-mining area was more than 60 percent."[4]

Inez is located at 37°51′59″N 82°32′21″W / 37.86639°N 82.53917°W / 37.86639; -82.53917 (37.866431, -82.539058).[5] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Inez is home to several industrial employers primarily focused on the area's robust energy market. A multitude of coal, gas and oil exploration and affiliated services companies operate in the mineral-rich areas in and around Martin County. Outside the city is another major regional employer, the Federal Bureau of Prisons' Big Sandy facility.
