Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Mount Olivet KY radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Kentucky or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Mount Olivet KY employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Mount Olivet KY home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Mount Olivet KY x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mount Olivet KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Kentucky xray technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Mount Olivet KY healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mount Olivet KY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Mount Olivet KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Mount Olivet KY schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Mount Olivet KY, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you may be asked. One of the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize some approaches about how you want to answer them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.
