And since most states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you might require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you research each of the colleges you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. A number of students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and frequently settle on the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifiers as well. For example, you must ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the degrees and training options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can practice in Salem KY hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Salem KY medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Salem KY radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Kentucky or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Salem KY employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Salem 42078As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Salem KY residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Salem KY x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Salem KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Kentucky radiology technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Salem KY healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Salem KY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Salem KY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Salem KY schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Salem KY, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
