But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Chilmark MA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Chilmark MA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Massachusetts or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Chilmark MA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Chilmark MA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of finding and assessing Chilmark MA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Chilmark MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Massachusetts xray technician programs you are reviewing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Chilmark MA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Chilmark MA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Chilmark MA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Chilmark MA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Chilmark MA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
