These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Conway MA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Conway MA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Conway MA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Massachusetts or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Conway MA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Schools

This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Conway MA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Conway MA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Conway MA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Massachusetts xray tech programs you are interested in have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Conway MA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Conway MA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Conway MA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Conway MA schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Conway MA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you could be asked. What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not merely the private reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of standard interview questions, so you should organize some strategies about how you would like to address them.
