But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical principal job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Newton MA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Newton MA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Newton MA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Massachusetts or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number provide other alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Newton MA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Newton 02158As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Newton MA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Newton MA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Newton MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Massachusetts radiology tech colleges you are assessing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Newton MA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Newton MA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Newton MA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Newton MA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Newton MA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to consider questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the private reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of standard interview questions, so you should organize several approaches about how you want to answer them. Given that there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't try to memorize a response, but take down some concepts and anecdotes that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the interviewer.

Some Background on Newton Massachusetts

Newton, Massachusetts

Newton is a suburban city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of downtown Boston and is bordered by Boston's Brighton and West Roxbury neighborhoods to the east and south, respectively, and by the suburb of Brookline to the east, the suburbs of Watertown and Waltham to the north, and Wellesley and Needham to the west. Rather than having a single city center, Newton resembles a patchwork of thirteen villages. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population of Newton was 85,146, making it the eleventh largest city in the state.

Newton was settled in 1630 as part of "the newe towne", which was renamed Cambridge in 1638. Roxbury minister John Eliot convinced the Native American people of Nonantum, a sub-tribe of the Massachusett led by a sachem named Waban, to relocate to Natick in 1651, fearing that they would be exploited by colonists.[3] Newton was incorporated as a separate town, known as Cambridge Village, in 1688, then renamed Newtown in 1691, and finally Newton in 1766.[4] It became a city in 1873. Newton is known as The Garden City.

In Reflections in Bullough's Pond, Newton historian Diana Muir describes the early industries that developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in a series of mills built to take advantage of the water power available at Newton Upper Falls and Newton Lower Falls. Snuff, chocolate, glue, paper and other products were produced in these small mills but, according to Muir, the water power available in Newton was not sufficient to turn Newton into a manufacturing city, although it was, beginning in 1902, the home of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, the maker of the Stanley Steamer.

Newton, according to Muir, became one of America's earliest commuter suburbs. The Boston and Worcester, one of America's earliest railroads, reached West Newton in 1834. Wealthy Bostonian businessmen took advantage of the new commuting opportunity offered by the railroad, building gracious homes on erstwhile farmland of West Newton hill and on Commonwealth street. Muir points out that these early commuters needed sufficient wealth to employ a groom and keep horses, to drive them from their hilltop homes to the station.

Further suburbanization came in waves. One wave began with the streetcar lines that made many parts of Newton accessible for commuters in the late nineteenth century. The next wave came in the 1920s when automobiles became affordable to a growing upper middle class. Even then, however, Oak Hill continued to be farmed, mostly market gardening, until the prosperity of the 1950s made all of Newton more densely settled. Newton is not a typical "commuter suburb" since many people who live in Newton do not work in downtown Boston. Most Newtonites work in Newton and other surrounding cities and towns.
