X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Worthington MA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Worthington MA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Worthington MA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Massachusetts or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Worthington MA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Worthington MA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Worthington MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Massachusetts radiology tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Worthington MA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Worthington MA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Worthington MA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Worthington MA schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Worthington MA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
