Radiology Technician Career Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Hildebran NC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Hildebran NC health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Hildebran NCThe standard requirement for attending a radiology tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Hildebran NC radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Hildebran NC employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Hildebran 28637As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually carried out in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Hildebran NC home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently cheaper than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Hildebran NC x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hildebran NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the North Carolina xray tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Hildebran NC health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Hildebran NC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Hildebran NC home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hildebran NC schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Hildebran NC, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you may be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to prepare some strategies about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the strengths you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down some ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.
