But now that you have made a decision to enter the gratifying field of healthcare, how do you tackle selecting the ideal college and program so that you will obtain the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And considering that most states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you might need preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you research each of the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Most potential students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are other significant qualifiers as well. For instance, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Shelbyville TN hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also frequently analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Shelbyville TN medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Shelbyville TNThe standard prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Shelbyville TN radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many offer additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Shelbyville TN employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Shelbyville 37160As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Shelbyville TN home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Shelbyville TN x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Shelbyville TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Tennessee radiology tech schools you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Shelbyville TN health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Shelbyville TN healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Shelbyville TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Shelbyville TN schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Shelbyville TN, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and skills you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must prepare some approaches about how you would like to address them. Since there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down a few ideas and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
