So it’s imperative that you research each of the colleges you are considering so that you can compare each program. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications as well. For instance, you must find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.
X-Ray Tech Career Summary
There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Eastlake CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Eastlake CO medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.
X-Ray Tech Degree Options
The primary prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Eastlake CO radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.
Radiographer Licensing and Certification
Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve other options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Eastlake CO employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.
Online Radiology Technologist Programs
As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Eastlake CO home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.
Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools
After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Eastlake CO x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.
Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Eastlake CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.
Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Colorado radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Eastlake CO health care community and help with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Eastlake CO healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.
Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Eastlake CO residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.
How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Eastlake CO schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.
Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Eastlake CO, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Eastlake Colorado
Charles Eastlake
Charles Locke Eastlake (11 March 1836 – 20 November 1906) was a British architect and furniture designer.
Eastlake was born in Plymouth. Trained by the architect Philip Hardwick (1792–1870), he popularized William Morris's notions of decorative arts in the Arts and Crafts style, becoming one of the principal exponents of the revived Early English or Modern Gothic style popular during the nineteenth century. He did not make any furniture; his designs were produced by professional cabinet makers. The style of furniture named after him, Eastlake style, flourished during the later half of the nineteenth century. A style of architecture, with old English and Gothic elements, is also named for him.
In 1868 he published Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and other Details, which was very influential in Britain, and later in the United States, where the book was published in 1872.
From 1866 to 1877 he was secretary to the Royal Institute of British Architects, and from 1878 to 1898 he was Keeper of the National Gallery, London.[1] His uncle, Sir Charles Lock Eastlake PRA (born in 1793), was an earlier Keeper of the National Gallery, from 1843 to 1847, which, nowadays, results in much confusion between the two men, whose names are distinguished only by the presence or absence of an "e" in their middle names.
He died, aged 70, at Leinster Square, Bayswater, and was buried at Kensal Green.
