They may practice in Webb AL clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Webb AL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many provide additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Webb AL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Webb AL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Webb AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Alabama xray technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Webb AL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Webb AL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Webb AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Webb AL schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Webb AL, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
