Ash Fork AZ x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Ash Fork AZ so you can become a radiologic technologist. And now that you have chosen to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you go about choosing the right school and program so that you will get the proper training to become a qualified professional? And because the majority of states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently work you might require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you investigate each of the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many prospective students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and frequently gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location need to be taken into consideration, there are other significant qualifiers also. For instance, you need to find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Ash Fork AZ hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ash Fork AZ health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Ash Fork AZThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Ash Fork AZ radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Arizona or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Ash Fork AZ employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Ash Fork 86320As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Ash Fork AZ home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Ash Fork AZ x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ash Fork AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Arizona radiology technician programs you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Ash Fork AZ health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ash Fork AZ healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Ash Fork AZ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Ash Fork AZ schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Ash Fork AZ, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the private reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, as well as a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to prepare several approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to impress the interviewer.
