But while cost and location must be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you need to find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Auberry CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Auberry CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Auberry CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Auberry CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Auberry CA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of locating and assessing Auberry CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Auberry CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the California radiology technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Auberry CA healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Auberry CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Auberry CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Auberry CA schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Auberry CA, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you could be asked.
