Radiology Tech Work Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Azusa CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Azusa CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

x-ray machine in Azusa CAThe primary requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Azusa CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Azusa CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Azusa 91702As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Azusa CA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and assessing Azusa CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Azusa CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the California radiology tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Azusa CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Azusa CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Azusa CA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Azusa CA colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Azusa CA, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and skills you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should ready some approaches about how you want to respond to them. Since there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down some concepts and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to impress the interviewer.

Some Background on Azusa California

Azusa, California

Azusa is a city in the San Gabriel Valley, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, California, United States.

The A on the San Gabriel Mountains represents the city of Azusa, and can be seen within a 30-mile radius. The population was 46,361 at the 2010 census, up from 44,712 at the 2000 census. Azusa is located along historic Route 66, which passes through the city on Foothill Boulevard and Alosta Avenue.

"Azusa stands for everything from A to Z in the U.S.A." has been a phrase used to promote the town by boosters such as the Chamber of Commerce for many years.[8][9][10] The place name "Azusa" actually dates to the Mexican Alta California era in the 19th century when Azusa was used to refer to the San Gabriel Valley and the San Gabriel River. It appears to have been derived from the Tongva place name Asuksagna.[11] The area was part of the Tongva peoples (GabrieleƱo Indians) homeland since at least 55 CE.[12]

The first Mexican settlement in Azusa was at the Rancho el Susa in 1841, a Mexican land grant from the Alta California Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado to Luis Arenas. In 1844 Arenas sold the rancho's land to Henry Dalton, an English immigrant and wealthy merchant from the Pueblo of Los Angeles, for $7,000. He renamed it Rancho Azusa de Dalton, and had built a winery, distillery, vinegar house, meat smokehouse, and flour mill. Also, a vineyard was planted. Dalton built a house here on a place known as Dalton Hill, near 6th Street and Cerritos Avenue in Azusa.

Dalton was also the owner of the adjacent and large Rancho San Francisquito and Rancho Santa Anita properties. In the end Dalton owned an unbroken expanse of land from the present day San Dimas to the eastern edge of Pasadena.[13] A portion of Azusa west of the San Gabriel River was within adjacent Rancho Azusa de Duarte
