These questions and others you must ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical principal job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Dinuba CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Dinuba CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Dinuba CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Dinuba CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Dinuba 93618As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Dinuba CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Dinuba CA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Dinuba CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California xray technician colleges you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Dinuba CA medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Dinuba CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Dinuba CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Dinuba CA colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Dinuba CA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that interviewers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not only the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you need to organize some ideas about how you want to answer them. Because there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the talents you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but write down a few concepts and talking points that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
