And now that you have decided to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you go about selecting the right college and program to ensure that you will obtain the proper training to become a qualified practitioner? And because the majority of states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately work you may require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you assess each of the schools you are looking at in order to compare each program. Many students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications also. For instance, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Work Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Fortuna CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Fortuna CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Fortuna CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Fortuna CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Fortuna 95540As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Fortuna CA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Fortuna CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fortuna CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the California xray technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Fortuna CA medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Fortuna CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Fortuna CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Fortuna CA colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Fortuna CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not only the private reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at what you do. Some Background on Fortuna California

Fortuna, California

Fortuna (formerly, Slide, Springville)[7] (Wiyot: Vutsuwitk Da'l, "ashes stay")[8] is a city the northeast shore of the Eel River (approximately 9 miles (14 km) from where it enters the Pacific Ocean), and is on U.S. Route 101 in west-central Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 11,926 at the 2010 census, up from 10,497 at the 2000 census.

The settlement was originally called "Slide," for Slide Hill, in 1874, named for the slide that was a fixture on the northeast side of the Eel River and the southwest portion of Christian Ridge just to the northwest, near the edge of town. In 1875, the name was changed to Springville during the construction of the Springville Mill, a lumber mill for the nearby redwood forests, named so because of the numerous springs in the area. The mill's owners were Henry Rohner (namesake of neighboring Rohnerville), Alexander Masson, M. N. Weber and G. F. Gushaw. Springville was originally a company town belonging to the mill, and the few people that resided there all worked at the mill. By the late 1870s Springville had grown enough to warrant a post office, but a town called Springville, California (now part of Camarillo, in Ventura County) already existed in the state. The post office was named Slide on May 24, 1876.[7][9] In 1884 the residents petitioned the state legislature for the name Fortuna, Spanish for "fortune" and Latin for "chance," and by July 3, 1888 the name was changed to Fortuna.[7][10] The name was chosen when settlers saw the proximity of the forests, the river and its valley, and the Pacific Ocean, as ideal for enjoying a good quality of life, and felt "fortunate" to live there.[10] It is believed that a local minister and real estate agent, desiring to sell lots to newcomers, devised the name as a marketing tool.[9][10]

Electricity came to Fortuna in 1883 when W. J. Swortzel and George W. Williams (of Swortzel & Williams), owners of the Springville Mill Company, built a $4,000 power plant.[11] Some of the local sawmills were already powered by electricity, and by providing power to the mills, Swortzel and Williams saw the opportunity to also provide inexpensive electric lighting to the townspeople.[11]

The town was incorporated on February 20, 1906, and, because of the Eel River, became known for its agricultural prowess in vegetable crops, berries and fruits, and for the fresh fish from the river. Although agricultural industry was expanding, the lumber industry is what started the town, and would continue as the main source of local income for some time to come.[9]

Rohnerville (formerly Eel River Township), a town founded to service the many gold miners inhabiting the mountains to the north and east, was competing with Fortuna to be the leading township in the area. The miners would come by ship to Eureka, and then head up the Eel River to the junction with the Van Duzen River, from whence the miners headed east up the Van Duzen River Valley into Trinity County. Rohnerville was at this junction, and looked to prosper from selling supplies to the miners. But when it was decided that the railroad would be routed through neighboring Fortuna, it set both towns' fate.[9]
