So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. But while expense and location need to be taken into account, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are evaluating are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Work Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Hawkinsville GA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Hawkinsville GA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Hawkinsville GA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Hawkinsville GA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Hawkinsville 31036As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Hawkinsville GA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Hawkinsville GA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hawkinsville GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Georgia radiology tech schools you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Hawkinsville GA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Hawkinsville GA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Hawkinsville GA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hawkinsville GA colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Hawkinsville GA, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
