These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Career Description

A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. They may practice in Nahunta GA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Nahunta GA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Georgia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Nahunta GA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Nahunta 31553As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Nahunta GA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Nahunta GA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Nahunta GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Georgia radiology tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Nahunta GA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Nahunta GA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Nahunta GA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Nahunta GA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Nahunta GA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you may be asked. Among the questions that interviewers typically ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and skills you have that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you must prepare some strategies about how you would like to answer them. Since there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the talents you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.
