Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Sellersburg IN radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Indiana or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Sellersburg IN employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. Plus online colleges are frequently cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Sellersburg IN x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sellersburg IN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Indiana xray tech schools you are interested in have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Sellersburg IN medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Sellersburg IN healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Sellersburg IN residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sellersburg IN colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Sellersburg IN, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
