They can practice in Bedford KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Bedford KY employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Bedford KY residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Bedford KY x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bedford KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Kentucky xray tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Bedford KY healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Bedford KY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Bedford KY residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bedford KY schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Bedford KY, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to review questions you could be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the personal reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you should ready a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Because there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job.
