West Dennis MA x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near West Dennis MA in order to become a radiology technologist. And now that you have made a decision to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, exactly how do you go about selecting the ideal college and program so that you will get the appropriate training to become a skilled professional? And because most states do require that radiology techs become licensed, depending on where you subsequently work you might require preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many prospective students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost must be considered, there are additional significant qualifiers also. For instance, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in West Dennis MA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment plus frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As West Dennis MA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that West Dennis MA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Massachusetts or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many West Dennis MA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in West Dennis 02670As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your West Dennis MA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing West Dennis MA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many West Dennis MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Massachusetts radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the West Dennis MA health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with West Dennis MA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their West Dennis MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the West Dennis MA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in West Dennis MA, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer applicants is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you need to ready a number of strategies about how you want to address them. Considering there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but take down several concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the recruiter.

Some Background on West Dennis Massachusetts

Dennis, Massachusetts

Dennis /ˈdɛnɪs/ is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, located near the center of Cape Cod. The population was 14,207 at the 2010 census.[1]

The town encompasses five distinct villages, each of which has its own post office. These constituent villages are Dennis (including North Dennis), Dennis Port, East Dennis, South Dennis, and West Dennis.[2]

Dennis was first settled in 1639, by John Crowe (later Crowell), Antony Thacher and Thomas Howes, as part of the town of Yarmouth. It was known then as the East Precinct.[3] The original inhabitants who preceded English settlers called the northern sections of town Nobscuesset, Sesuit, and Quivet.[4]

The town officially separated and incorporated in 1793. It was named after resident minister, Rev. Josiah Dennis.[5] There was not enough land for farming, so seafaring became the town's major industry in its early history, centered around the Shiverick Shipyard.

Currently, Dennis is a popular seaside resort town, notable for its stately colonial mansions along the northern Cape Cod Bay coastline, and its picturesque, warm-water beaches along the southern Nantucket Sound.[6]
