And considering that most states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you assess each of the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many potential students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost must be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Mauston WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Mauston WI health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Mauston WI radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Wisconsin or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Mauston WI employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Mauston WI residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Mauston WI x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mauston WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Wisconsin radiology tech colleges you are assessing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Mauston WI health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Mauston WI healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Mauston WI home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Mauston WI colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Mauston WI, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you may be asked.
