Radiology Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Anna IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Anna IL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Anna ILThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Anna IL radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number accept additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Anna IL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Anna 62906As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Anna IL residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Anna IL x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Anna IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Illinois radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Anna IL health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Anna IL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Anna IL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Anna IL schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Anna IL, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Anna, Illinois

Anna is a city in Union County, Illinois, United States. Located in Southern Illinois, the population was 4,442 at the 2010 United States Census, a decline from 5,135 in 2000. The city is known for being tied to its close neighbor Jonesboro, together known as Anna-Jonesboro. Anna is renowned for the Anna State Mental Hospital or the Choate Mental Health Care Center.

Anna was platted on March 3, 1854.[3] The village was named after Anna Davis, the wife of a first settler.[4] The city was incorporated on February 16, 1865.[5]

Anna was historically a sundown town, in which African Americans were excluded from living in the town's limits. In 1909, a mob of angry white citizens drove out Anna's black families following the lynching in a nearby town of a black man accused of raping a white woman.[6][7] According to historian James W. Loewen, a common adage in the town was that its name of "Anna" was actually an acronym, standing for "Ain't No Niggers Allowed". However, this acronym is rarely, if ever, used by any of the current residents of the town, and several black families now live in Anna and are welcomed as equal members of the community.[8][9]

Anna is located at 37°27′40″N 89°14′20″W / 37.46111°N 89.23889°W / 37.46111; -89.23889.[10]

According to the 2010 census, Anna has a total area of 3.519 square miles (9.11 km2), of which 3.5 sq mi (9.06 km2) (or 99.46%) is land and 0.019 sq mi (0.05 km2) (or 0.54%) is water.[11]
