And since the majority of states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you might need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Many prospective students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and usually gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location should be considered, there are additional important qualifiers as well. For example, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same fundamental job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Osborne KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Osborne KS medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Osborne KS radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several accept other options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Osborne KS employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Osborne KS home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Osborne KS x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Osborne KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Kansas radiology tech programs you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Osborne KS medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Osborne KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Osborne KS home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Osborne KS colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Osborne KS, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must ready several strategies about how you would like to answer them. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down several concepts and anecdotes that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Osborne is a city in and the county seat of Osborne County, Kansas, United States.[6] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,431.[7]

Osborne, a Union Army veteran of the American Civil War, same as the county.[9][10] Osborne City became the permanent county seat in November 1872.[8] A district judge officially proclaimed it a city in May 1873, but the townspeople failed to legally organize a government. Five years later, a second attempt was successful, and the settlement incorporated as a city in 1878.[11] "City" was dropped from its name by the mid-1890s.[8]

A bridge was built at Osborne over the Solomon River in 1878.[12]
