Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that London KY radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Kentucky or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many London KY employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). What to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating London KY x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many London KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Kentucky xray tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the London KY medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with London KY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their London KY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the London KY schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in London KY, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
